Review of A Face in the Crowd (1957) by Mloy X — 18 Jan 2010
Borrowing a quote from another great movie, "the problem with absolute power is that it corrupts absolutely." The film is not just a tragic tale of the rise and fall of "simple country boy" but a scarry commentary on the effects of "icons (to be a bit more biblical: false idols)" on the populace which still rings true even to this day.
This movie was perfection! It's one of the best movies I've seen (I love TCM!). Andy Griffith was charismatic and rotten at the same time but oh so good in this film, he can make you love him and hate him but still feel sympathetic even at his worst.
I don't think it would have been the same if the lead didn't have have the Southern charm that Mr. Griffith could exude. He was simply awesome! Another great film from director Elia Kazan.
