Review of A Civil Action (1998) by David S — 01 Sep 2010
I'm a lawsuit movie guy. I love 'Runaway Jury', 'The Rainmaker', 'A Time to Kill', and many many others. What keeps this as a standout from all of those, is that there is no *spoiler* happy ending. It doesn't all turn out fine in the end.
It does show the pain and hardship of practicing law, and the emotional turmoil that families that have been hurt by big corporations can go through. It's a wonderful cast. Travolta is the 'proud' and classy lawyer who thinks he can be the classy guy of the law firm. Duvall is the experienced and knowledgeable 'old man' who can read ahead any situation and not worry about it. Shalhoub, Macy and Ivanek play the three other partners to Travolta who sacrifice all in a cause that seemed impossible right from the start.
For me this breaks out of the Hollywood mold, which is why I like it.
7/10.
