Review of A Civil Action (1998) by Ryan T — 29 Jul 2012
A Civil Action is adopted from novel of same name by Jonathan Harr. It was directed by Steven Zaillian. It's based on actual events of contaminated ground water 'environment-pollution' in Woburn (Massachusetts) during 1980s; at the hands of real companies Beatrice Foods, W.R. Grace and Company. John Travolta plays Boston plaintiff attorney Jan Schlictmann; others include Robert Duvall, William H. Macy, Sydney Pollack and Kathy Bates (in cameo roles).
I value court-room movies, for because they dig out buried treasure to provide us with true angles of scenarios. A Civil Action is interlaced with fine performance from John Travolta and Robert Duvall. It may loose its intense grip around the movie at some scenes, but wait until it really re-gears toward thrill again.
NOTE: Don't expect more from plot, frankly because it's based on real events.
