Review of A Civil Action (1998) by Adam S — 27 Apr 2013
As far as legal thrillers from the 90's go, "A Civil Action" is one of the better ones. John Travolta is a strong leading man, capitalizing on his post-"Pulp Fiction" revival to portray the lawyer who takes on a landmark environmental cause.
Along with Travolta, the cast includes strong performances from the likes of William H. Macy, Sydney Pollack and John Lithgow, as well as an Oscar-nominated turn from Robert Duvall and perfectly cast bit role from comedy legend Stephen Fry (after all, unless you get a scientist in, Fry is the closest thing you're going to get to be a science expert).
The story is gripping, though it drags in parts, and while I understand the film revolves around the true story of Jan Schlichtmann, the ending where the corporations are brought to account is rushed.
But otherwise, good film.
