Review of A Better Tomorrow II (1987) by Eric N — 26 May 2014
Starts off feeling like an unnecessary sequel, but soon picks back up as you realize the story of Ho (Ti Lung) and Kit (Leslie Cheung) is an interesting one and much welcomed to continue. It's good but not as good a story this time, but the action is bigger.
Every film Woo makes seems to set a new standard for action shoot-outs. You can draw a line through history from Taxi Driver to this to Robert Rodriguez, Tarantino, Johnnie To -- a ton of modern filmmakers.
The reason is: this is an inventive and uniquely talented production in cinematography and acting. I feel by the end it is almost as enjoyable to watch as the first, but the first is just better. It has something special like Robocop -- a sequel wasn't necessary, though like Robocop 2, there's a lot to enjoy here anyway.
