Review of A Better Life (2011) by Raul V — 20 Jul 2011
From the director of "About A Boy" comes a very heart-felt, engaging, & most of all...relevant film about an undocumented, immigrant father & his struggle to make a better life for his legally-born son, amidst the currently hot climate surrounding the subject of immigration.
Demian Bichir (most notably "Esteban" from the last few seasons of "Weeds") gives a very honest & touching performance that...in my opinion...puts him up there for later award contention.
Most likely Independent Spirit Award & NOT Oscar. Regardless, it's a very good story with just enough heartbreak & hope mixed in to draw a wide range of moviegoers. WATCH THE TRAILER! I highly recommend this one peoples.
..so catch it @ your local arthouse cinema (Bijou in San Antonio) if you can. Also, just to complete the bigger picture of this immigration issue...rent or watch "The Other Side Of Immigration" on Netflix Instant.
..I implore you! Together I believe that a much more complex understanding of the issue can be derived than what gets presented on your national news networks & fuckin' talk radio shows.
