Review of A Better Life (2011) by Michael M — 07 Aug 2011
A deeply moving and well-acted drama about a father and son. The movie uses the topic of illegal immigration to tell the personal story about a Mexican gardener trying to make a better life for himself and his son.
Director Weitz brings an authenticity to the characters and environment. Though the pacing drags at times, the performances are first rate and the story packs an emotional punch. Bichir delivers a remarkable and award-worthy performance as the father.
He is sincere, heartbreaking, and honest in his work. He is subtle in conveying a whole world of pain to the character, just by using his facial expressions. Weitz takes a complex topic and brings a personal touch that resonates with the viewer and never feels preachy.
It's a vital, heartfelt, and haunting movie.
