Review of 8MM (1999) by Ken C — 14 Oct 2011
Not bad, not bad at all. Nothing about this movie really struck me as "gratuitous" or "unappealing." I liked the story, and the entire cast did a stellar job, in my opinion anyway.
I think most of my RT friends on here know how big a Nic Cage fan I am, and even though I said he did a good job I think that Jaquine Phoenix kind of over shadowed Nic just a little bit in this movie. Phoenix is great in every role he's in even if it's a real bad movie he still does a fantastic job. I thought him and Nic made a good team and as the movie went on and as I began liking these characters more and more, I started to ponder why people hate this movie so much? Is it because it's violent? Grow up! Have you ever seen Eastern Promises where Viggo Mortenson fights two guys completely naked and stabs one guy straight in the eye with a knife without the camera cutting away? Watch that and then tell me this is violent.
I thought that the violence and disturbing images in this movie worked pretty well actually, and Joel Schumacher presents all of it in very gritty and good looking cinematography. It's probably my favorite out of all the movies he's made.
I liked this movie a lot, and I think you should all see it. It's a good time, I had fun and I definetly didn't forget about it the next day so you know it's gonna be either really good or really bad. Don't listen to the reviews, they don't know what there talking about.
