Review of 84 Charing Cross Road (1987) by Zarinah H — 02 Apr 2008
I actually watched the movie first and then read the book. I loved them both - two 'soulmates' united in their love of books. Anne Bancroft is wonderfully witty in this movie [a far cry from the sultry Mrs Robinson she plays in The Graduate], and Anthony Hopkins is very much understated yet effectively charming in his role as a bookseller.
Anglophiles will take absolute delight in this movie, but will appeal above all to bibliophiles - it is a slow-moving yet appropriately paced 'love story' of sorts that celebrates the love of books and of enduring friendship.
Touching and beautiful - it's hard to find movies like this today.
