Review of 84 Charing Cross Road (1987) by Patrick R — 16 Dec 2008
Sweet love story about two people separated by an ocean, but connected through a love of fine literature. There's no plot, per se. But the movie makes up for the lack of action through its deft use of New York and London locations.
This film has the feel of both places, as well as the richness of elegant words. Anne Bancroft and Anthony Hopkins are pitch perfect in their roles. And, for anyone under the age of 40, this film provides a glimpse into a recent past when communication wasn't so instant, and when it was possible to relish the (literarlly) written word.
