Review of 48 Hrs. (1982) by Alex M — 22 Jun 2013
Walter Hill directs this buddy cop movie that is able to blend action and comedy very well thanks to the great pair of leads. When a cop killer is on the loose, Jack Cates (Nick Nolte) is put on the case to catch him by any means necessary.
In order to do that, he ends up teaming up with a former crew member of the suspect, Reggie Hammond (Eddie Murphy), who is currently in prison. Cates get him released into his care for 48 hours to try and find this killer.
The film moves at a very brisk pace and includes star making performances from both Nolte and Murphy (who was making his film debut at the time). Their chemistry is great together and it is easy to forget now a days how slick and funny Eddie really used to be.
The film is also sprinkled with racial tension that was still very high in the 1980s and includes a great scene in a country bar. All in all, it is a fun movie to watch and it exceeds its "buddy cop" premise.
