Review of 47 Meters Down (2017) by Carl A — 21 Jun 2017
Until 47 Meters Down I did not think it was possible to watch shark filled waters for an hour and a half and be that bored. Even the decrepit cable that breaks trapping our heroines at the bottom of the ocean was stronger than this films storyline. After the basic premise of the film is established, which is nothing more than two sisters take a vacation to Mexico and get stuck in a shark cage, the movie stops developing completely. At that point there is no longer any character, situational, sub textual or story development at all.
For the most part the vast majority of the films dialogue breaks down into the two main characters repeating the phrases "we're going to run out of air" or "we're going to die down here". And as the viewer you're absolutely going to feel like you're dying down there! Let's face it the summer shark movie was born and saw its apex in 1975 with Steven Spielberg's Jaws. Save yourself the money and just see Jaws again.
