Went to see this with high expectations following the reviews. I am afraid to say the hype is not justified- this is actually quite a slight film although there is one outstanding feature- and its not the performance of Charlotte Rampling but Tom Courtney.

The main problem with this film is it is very difficult to understand what Kate Mercer's problem is. Her loving husband of endured a life shattering event nearly 50 years ago and when it comes back to remind him he is unsurprisingly taken back to the way he felt then. Why she cannot simply give him a bit of time and space to get over it baffles me. But we are expected to sympathise with a woman who thinks her partner should come without any sort of past. No wonder they did not talk about it for 45 years- she is incapable of accepting her husband has had anyone else in her life but herself.

That's one problem- the second is Charlotte Rampling. She is just posh and its hard to see how she would ever be with a chap with a set of undercrackers like Tom Courney's, let alone an unreconstructed leftie who effs and blinds when moved to do so.

This is a perfectly decent film but it dies every time tom Courtney is not in it, especially the excrutiating chats with her girlfriend, Geraldine James. Highlight: Tom attempting and failing to have sex (thank god it did fail). Low point: awful lines poor old Geraldine James has to spout about 'men' and Charlotte Rampling feeling sorry for herself after her husbands wonderful public tribute to her.

Save your money and watch it on TV.
