Review of 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007) by James M — 26 Jun 2010
4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days is a film that, on the surface, is about a pregnant woman living in 80s Romania. She wants an abortion but because of questionable human rights issues, abortion is not allowed in Romania and so she seeks to have an illegal one. Her friend plays a vital role in helping her through it, despite the murky and desperately sad moments they share together.
Whilst there's no doubt that the film is a sterling piece of textbook film making, 4 Months, 3 Weeks And 2 Days may come across as a terminally dark film that is just too dispiriting for anyone to enjoy. However, the film is a little more angular than that and makes an encouraging statement on the very essence of human nature. It restores your faith in the power of unwavering friendships, selflessness and the goodness in people whatever the circumstances and however tragic.
