Review of 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007) by Kyle G — 17 Nov 2011
A shot of mind-rattling and vicious realism, dissecting the horror of getting an abortion in Ceau?escu's Romania in 1987. The discomfort and toil gives way to a deftly poetic stroke of empathy and understanding.
It's slim like Das Fräulein, a Serbian film from 2006, and attuned in a similar way to hardscrabble gender roles in modern Europe. Mungiu's drama is nicely, delicately, but very brutally voyeuristic.
Painful and quite beautiful.
