Review of 25th Hour (2002) by Abdelrhman E — 22 Jun 2009
A powerful and evocative film about a drug dealer's last day of freedom, the movie centers around the struggle going on within himself as he tries to come to terms with a lengthy prison term sentence.
Spike Lee takes the viewer down a path of soul searching as each character faces their inner demons and the role they've played in Monty's fate. Spike Lee left his stylistic imprint on this film, primarily through his glorification of NYC, which through the progression of the movie takes on the identity of a character in its own right.
25th hour was filmed during the wake of 9/11 and several references are made about the disaster during the movie. Monty's soliloquy which borders on a rant is one the most profound I have seen in a film and strong performances throughout the cast make this one of my favorite Spike Lee joints.
