Review of 2036 Origin Unknown (2018) by Paxton O — 28 Dec 2018
Watch "Moon" starring Sam Rockwell, and tell me this doesn't seem extremely familiar - largely a 1-person cast, remote location. Sam Rockwell's character even discovers a vault underneath his base, and discovers that he is a clone. No doubt both movies are inspired by 2001, from which "2036" borrows heavily...or...steals? There are some trippy nebula sequences which are not an homage, but a blatant copy.
The budget may have played a role, but the main body of the film and the ending seemed very disjointed. The story had a lot of potential, but I don't think it was well executed.
All this said, it's an entertaining film; suspenseful and well-acted. Katee Sackhoff does a really excellent job, and this would be a 4 or 5 star review if it rested solely on her performance.
In short, this is a heavily "2001" inspired movie, with many elements of "Moon", and even massages of the "Terminator" franchise, but doesn't really say or do anything the other films don't. But Katee - keep doing what you're doing - A+.
