Review of 2010 (1984) by Anthony E — 08 Mar 2010
As a stand alone film 2010 is suspenseful, innovative towards its craft and fun to watch. But since there is a 2001, the comparisons must be made and this is where the film falls completely and flatly on its postmodern posterior.
I wont discuss the many inconsistencies but I will mention the one disturbing feature between the different periods in which these films were made. 2001 is a masterpiece for many reasons, but one reason in particular is the film's allowance that it's audience can think and reason.
Maybe even come up with ideas of its own. Meaning it is open ended. 2010 is anything but. In an ever increasing postmodern need to EXPLAIN everything, 2010 does just that. Constant voiceover is used to explain what is going on, what needs to happen, why the characters do what they do.
Conclusion? The story for the second film is that much weaker and the vision of director not as strong. Now this is not to say that Peter Hyams did not do an excellent job. It just shows a massive difference between filmmaker's and by extension, their audiences.
It is really cool to see a much younger Helen Mirren AND Zooey Deschanel's mom in the same film though!
