Review of 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) by David D — 23 Apr 2014
Many have tried to replicate the epic scale of this film and failed. In my opinion, 2001: A Space Odyssey is the greatest film ever made. Artistically and visually groundbreaking, this film was released right in the middle of the great space race.
The use of music is superb. 2001 is chock full of hidden subliminal messages. It's often slow, which gives you time to ponder the meaning of every scene visually. This film is not for the intellectually lazy.
If you manage to watch the film in its entirety without falling asleep, you will be left with a head scratcher, although an epic one. The film leaves you with an itching feeling tugging at your subconscious.
You'll think to yourself, "What did I just witness?". The film can be interpreted many ways but one thing is for sure, Kubrick made much more than just a space race propaganda film. He made an epic sci-fi film that makes us question the meaning of consciousness and human nature.
2001 still heavily influences sci-fi today. Everyone needs to see this film, it sets the standard for high-quality film making.
