Review of 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) by Franz H — 30 Oct 2015
All of the many praises of this film are spot on. When it came out in 1968 it was brilliant, innovative, spectacular, and a whole bunch of other stuff. And films are still copying its look and style today.
In it's time it was the first science fiction film that treated science fiction as a reality. If you haven't seen it, you're missing one of the great classics. The only downside, IMO, was the ending.
As I recall, Arthur C Clarke, who wrote the original novel, once said that the ending wasn't supposed to mean anything, he just threw a bunch of stuff together. And that's how it comes across.
Don't expect to understand it, just enjoy. I recall being so excited to see Kubrick's next film after 2001 came out in '68 (Clockwork Orange). Unfortunately, it was terrible, and everyone was scratching their heads wondering what happened.
