Saw this in a theater during the first showing and it blew my mind! The absolute in cutting edge special effects for the day. No GCI in the 60's. The movie fleshes out Arthur Clarke's short story, "The Sentinel" in a way that formed the bases for all Sci-Fi movies thereafter.
It's too bad that the future failed us on this dream...
