Review of 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) by Emile H — 05 Jun 2016
Obsession. That's what makes the science fiction masterpiece worth sitting through the two and a half hours of visual extravaganza. As humans, we seem to pay attention more to the effects and not get the full picture that the superintelligent computer such as Hal 9000 could decrypt with ease.
Kubrick is essentially setting up an anthology film tied together by something that could've been a giant McGuffin, at least until the eventual discovery. The lack of dialogue and the mass amount of suspense is the film's highest point.
However, what you've seen throughout this entire movie then becomes, very strangely, what you get.
