Review of 20 Feet from Stardom (2013) by Jeff C — 18 Feb 2014
Backup singers and their contributions to music in the last 50 years have always been marginalized and pushed to the background. 20 Feet From Stardom explores their fascinating world, focusing on a handful of the most influential.
It covers everything from the rise of backup singers in the 60s, where gospel music began to become secularized, the decrease of backup singers in modern times, and how insanely difficult it is to make the jump from backup to a successful solo career.
It features interviews from the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Mick Jagger, Sting and Stevie Wonder, and you really get an inside look into the psychology of being a backup singer and how they shaped some of the most influential music of the 20th century.
It's all very interesting and leaves you with a different perspective on the whole thing, a must watch for every serious music fan and worthy Best Documentary nominee.
