Review of Sicario: Day of the Soldado (2018) by Jeff C — 27 Jun 2018
Wow where to even start... I was hesitant from the start knowing that Villeneuve and Decans are both not on board for this follow up to the first film and boy was I right to be worried. Day Of The Soldado is one of the worst sequels in cinematic history. The film has extreme pacing issues, cutting between multiple characters, none of which have any interesting arc's. About about the 1 hour mark I was considering leaving the theater but I kept telling myself no no no wait it's going to pay off at the end... It never did.. in fact the ending was pretty comical enough that the theater erupted in laughter even though the scene was clearly suppose to be a serious scene (cue intense film score). As the film progresses it slows down even more. The half hour mark till the end of the film is some of the slowest parts just when you think the tension is goign to ratchet up it doesn't and never does. The acting was pretty good but I feel for Del Toro and Brolin because they must have been working REALLY hard to even make this a slightly watchable film.
In closing if you enjoyed the first for it's character arc's, beautiful cinematography, and some of the most intense and suspenseful scenes in recent film making you will be leaving the theater VERY disappointed and perhaps, like myself, laughing along with half the theater wondering what you could have done with that 2 1/2 hours of your life that just got wasted.
