Review of 13 Assassins (2010) by Darren H — 18 Feb 2012
Braveheart didn't need to be remade as a samurai film. Or vice-versa: A samurai film dressed as Braveheart (sans kilts). Miike's take on the chambara film is a decidedly straightforward take, containing neither the artistic flourishes of Takeshi Kitano nor the refined drama of Yoji Yamada.
Don't expect Seven Samurai. Expect The Dirty Dozen, which wouldn't be bad for a lesser director.
