Review of 13 Assassins (2010) by Itisme3Movies — 23 Apr 2021
Pretty great Samurai film. This is much more inline with the classics of the genre than he last bunch I talked about. Being a remake of the beloved 1963 film of the same name might have a lot to do with this. I am not convinced this is better than the 60s version, but it is different.
The increased budget dose lend the final war sequence some juice and the modern films focus on the characters and their motivations is a dramatic improvement to the almost clinical concept of the original, which is two military geniuses facing off as if on a gameboard. So it is like both films are super great, but they are actually very different films. I guess this is what you want from a remake, a actual reimagining, rather than a copy.
The 13th Samurai himself is very different. In the original he was commoner who dreamed of being a Samurai to gain honour, but found he was noble all along. Just like Scarecrow. In the new one he is a terribly misplaced comic refile that jarringly takes you out of what is a oppressive serious and dark tale. He is also kinda of magical in a way, like the Gods helped the Assassins. While I liked that touch a lot, the comedy stuff was appallingly bad and really **** the entire vibe of the film. Lucky it was able to get back on track.
The film is a good example of how things change over time. The bad guy is not just a evil lord, he is a **** psychopathic monster... everything in the remake is just turned up a little. This isn't really a bad thing, but if you are the kind of guy that like 2 min staring silence while staring over sword blades this might not be the film for you.
Verdict : The suicide squad is a total rip off.
