Review of 13 Assassins (2010) by Mike L — 16 May 2012
Very mixed feelings about this movie. My problem was that my expectations were way too high due to this movie being over hyped and over praised. What this movie lacked was a balance in action. Yes, the last 1/3 of the movie was interesting in that it was one epic battle between the 13 vs. 200...but the first half was so slow, and a tad hard to understand/follow at times that I was practically falling asleep, desperate for the bloody swordplay featured in the last 1/3 of the movie.
As one user mentioned, by the time the last battle occurs, you just want the movie to be over with. This is probably one of the only times where I actually wish a battle sequence was shortened due to that feeling and the fact that it got repetitive and uninteresting once all the traps and creative killing methods were used.
Acting and plot were so-so, not much to say there but just thought I'd throw that in there.
My rating: 6/10...mix the action throughout the movie better and the rating soars...but the 1hr+ of straight dialogue and lackluster preparations really killed the movie for me.
