Review of 101 Ways (The Things a Girl Will Do to Keep Her Volvo) (2000) by Kyle G — 23 May 2012
Ridiculously flashy but surprisingly fresh and funny. All the mechanics are pretty transparent as far as the gay best friend, cashier boy crush, and universal fussy quirk. But the brushstrokes on top of those -- objectifying themes of car-keeping and novel-writing, along with brash and up-front silliness re: horrible, oafish ex-boyfriends and demoralizing mid-20s enterprising -- keep the story perky and interesting.
There are some decent minor moments; the pilot's weird pilot voice and awkward bombast, the "There is nothing I love more than texture" fantasy, and the very natural and comfortably-conclusive ending conversation.
