Review of Doctor Strange (2016) by Kyle G — 05 Jun 2017
Given that this is among the safely critic-approved Marvel movies coming off the assembly line each year, I'm going to be accordingly harder on it than I would be on a standalone.
The ultimate villain is comically ridiculous, a far cry from what a universal power like that should be. It's probably the hardest villain to take seriously in the Marvel movie universe thus far. The plot is nonsense crafted to at least be somewhat reasonable, and I can't agree with a message criticizing the cold, precise expertise of surgeons, arrogant as some may be.
That being said, on its own it's a decent superhero action movie. No strong characters except maybe Dr. Strange, many were bland and some were even unnecessary. Visual effects of rotating cityscapes were pretty cool, probably inspired by Inception.
Is anyone else getting annoyed at how many heroes are accumulating in the Marvel universe? We're going to have far more heroes than villains, and NONE of them will ever die because every movie will be a safe crowd-pleaser off the assembly line. Dr. Strange adds to the already-long list of superpower advantages the heroes collectively have: now they can play with his ability to access other dimensions. Will this franchise just keep adding heroes indefinitely? Probably, because Disney will be wiping its butt with money for the rest of forever with this gig and Star Wars.
