Review of Solitary Man (2009) by Celeste S — 14 Jul 2010
I have always considered Michael Douglas a good actor, but roles like Gordon Gekko ("Wall Street"), William "D-Fens" Foster ("Falling Down"), and now Ben Kalmen make me wonder if he's not great.
Douglas is at his best when he's playing a bad guy, and Kalmen is a bad guy indeed. He wasn't always, but he became that way, perhaps for no reason, and being a voyeur to his decline is almost painful because Douglas portrays it so well .
. . so well, in fact, that you find yourself pulling for Kalmen even though he is utterly reprehensible.
