Review of Solitary Man (2009) by Thomas V — 31 Mar 2012
Michael Douglas is once again delivering a flawless performance in the title role of a man in his 60s who decided to live a frivolous lifestyle after he got afraid of having a medical exam to confirm a diagnosis.
The direction from Brian Koppelman and David Levien who I never heard of before seems pretty great to me. They center the movie around the theme of chosing to live accompanied or alone (despite friend-like and family appearances), and they demonstrate the flaws of the ladder in a very convincing way.
Even though the film mainly revolves around Ben Kalmen, the supporting roles are also delivering good performances, but ultimately it's Michael Douglas that carries Solitary Man and makes it an unexpectedly very touching movie.
One of my Michael Douglas favorite since Wall Street and The Game. Definitely fresh.
