Review of Love & Mercy (2015) by Gary K — 22 Jun 2015
For music or culture fans this is a fascinating look into the troubled mind of musical genius Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. I grew up in Southern California, and the band's hit 'I Get Around' was the first record I ever bought with my own money at 15.
I thought I knew something about the band, but this movie was a real eye opener. We see great performances from everyone involved, especially Paul Dano and John Cusack as the young prodigy and the older Brian, fighting to break the figurative chains thrown on him by his Dr.
and keeper, Eugene Landy, played to an almost over the top crescendo by Paul Giamatti. Elizabeth Banks is perfect as the woman who rescues him and literally saves his life. One of the best movies of the year.
