Review of L'Avventura (1960) by Chad C — 26 Oct 2007
Happily, this "classic" drew me in right away, in spite of the "important! seminal! classic" baggage which often (along with the lack of contextual meaning) weighs an older work to heavily for the contemporary and naive viewer.
The plot doesn't feel contrived at all as it unfolds, it feels unnaturally natural -- characters going whimsical directions that don't seem to escalate the stakes that we expect to escalate -- so that the shock of how beautifully and unnaturally characters are suddenly (!) and regularly framed by surprisingly gorgeous (and mostly wild) locations; the emotional payoff comes over and over again during the last half hour of the film, rendering the first two acts as brilliantly plotted setups for what's to come.
