Review of La Strada (1954) by Austin S — 11 Jul 2007
Fellini's neorealist masterpiece "La Strada" (The Road in English) is a simple, but very poignant and powerful fable about the intrinsic nature of humans to ultimately love, even underneath layers of torment and fear.
The main characters, Gelsomina and Zampano, are truly polar opposites put together under abject conditions. Gelsomina suffers in life, yet retains a childlike optimism and love of humanity through everything.
Zampano has been so worn down by his life's experiences that he no longer feels compassion for anything. Like any fable, it instructs on how to live life. It shows in a very simple, delicate story that without the simplest childlike love for life, there is no meaning to life.
