Review of Harlan County U.S.A. (1977) by Matt B — 23 Feb 2008
One of the most amazing movies I've ever seen. I go to college in Eastern Kentucky and have several friends that grew up in Harlan County and have family that lived there during the strike, and it really blows my mind that these people, who do dangerous and essential jobs, had to fight so hard to make a living that most would agree is not ideal.
The intense fighting between the union workers and the scabs is more effective than any other movie I have seen, and this was real life for these people not very long ago. It is a testament to the strength of these people, especially the wives of these workers.
It showed a community that came together and fought oppression and even racism in an area that many people think everyone is racist and stupid. These are simple people that try to live simple lives, and this movie shows the strength that they have when faced with struggles, and I think everyone would be a better person for watching it.
