Absolutely brilliant! A film that simultaneously interrogates the boredom and uselessness of the bourgeoisie and deconstructs the depiction of violence in films. The film implicates us along with the killers as if we the audience are equivalent with them in our desire to see blooshed, a desire the film short circuits by having all of the violence take place off-screen.
Nonetheless the film proves harrowing and brutal throughout...scenes of absolute silence convey deep waves of emotion and terror. However, the true source of horror in the film is the joy that we the audience take in watching the torture and degradation of others.
We are the true villains of Funny Games.
