Review of Funny Games (1997) by L L — 16 Jan 2017
The worst Haneke film... I cannot believe he even made this piece of shit. The character's reference to the camera is pretentiously awkward and not the usual brilliant subtle play with the narrative genre as was displayed in Code Unknown.
Nothing more needs to be said. Despite being an admirer of Haneke, and an open-minded viewer of experimental, narrative innovation - I am sorry to share that it is not worth anyone's time and everything you need to see is in the trailer on youtube.
This was just a farce of a film. The only noteworthy scene was the still, master shot of the wife and husband's reaction to the initial departure of the two antagonists. The stillness of the master shot reminded me of photography by Gregory Crewdson, now at Yale.
The silent unfolding of their traumatized state, and the patience of the camera and editing to give worth to that time is the only redeeming aspect of the film. Otherwise very disappointing. Better off watching Haneke's Cache or Kubrick's The Shining.
