Review of Lolita (1962) by Luke P — 01 Jul 2008
Am I allowed to say how much I liked this movie?? Wow! It's apparently nothing like the novel, which is never a bad thing when Stanley Kubrick is in charge. His "Lolita" is uncomfortably charming and just provocative enough to keep you edgy without wanting to leave.
First off, it is a non-traditional romance in every way, from the unsympathetic lead and risky subject matter, to the give-away opening and never-happy narrative. What a lot of sad and emotionally screwed up characters...and that mystery subplot with Peter Sellers to top it off. I think this may be my favorite Kubrick film.
