Matthew Lillard absolutely has a long way to go as a director, but the story and performances really carry this thing and I can't deny that despite the clunkiness of Lillard's direction his heart is absolutely 100% in the right place and to adapt a YA novel and not shy away from the ugly stuff is pretty admirable.
