Review of Cube (1998) by Brandon W — 22 Dec 2017
Cube is directed and co-written by Vincenzo Natali, and it stars Nicole de Boer, Nicky Guadagni, and David Hewlett in a science fiction horror film about a group of people that woke up in a cube shaped place that has traps in specific places, and they have to get out of the place.
My friends and I were trying to find a horror movie to watch that we haven't seen, and one of my friends suggested that we watch this, which I remember that as like one of the inspirations for Saw or something like that.
So when we finished it, either half the group didn't like it, or almost all of them didn't except for me as I thought it's good for what it is. I did find the premise to be really interesting, and I was curious about the traps that are in the cube.
The characters are nothing special, but I wanted to see them get out of it. Most of the effects are decent at best, and I wasn't quite sure how they were gonna get out of the mess. It gets really suspenseful at times, and the first 10 minutes were really good as it shows a person just finding his way in the maze without any dialogue.
The acting however is not that good, and one of the actors in this acts crazy in an over the top way with his eyes being so wide when that person gets crazy. There some oddball writing in this that can be unintentionally funny, but it does keep you invested in the mystery and original premise.
Cube is a good movie that I understand why people really enjoy this, even though the acting and writing are very odd to say at least.
