Review of Thank You for Your Service (2017) by Brandon W — 14 Nov 2017
Thank You for Your Service is the directorial debut of Jason Hall who wrote Clint Eastwood's American Sniper, and it stars Miles Teller, Haley Bennett, and Joe Cole in a biographical war drama film about 3 soldiers that went back to United States after Iraq, and after the experience that they dealt with as soldiers, they ended up with PTSD.
I wasn't thinking much of it, other then how annoying it is to get the same trailer every time that I go see a film before this came out. So the reason I went to see this is because I attended a speech at my college where they talk about soldiers' experience that they have a bit of PTSD.
I enjoyed it enough that I went to go see this by myself, and I thought this is a great one. The acting is great, and Miles Teller always does a good job as the main lead. I thought Beulah Koale was a surprise to me because I never seen this guy before in any films as he plays Miles Teller's best friend that wants to go back to war, and what he had to deal with for his character is really interesting and well done.
As for Amy Schumer, I'm not going to talk about her history here as I'll be talking about her performance here, and consider that this is the first drama performance that I've seen her in, I thought she didn't do too bad in this.
She's not the best in terms of comedians giving a dramatic performance, but I thought she did good in what little part she got in this. The portrayal of PTSD is quite haunting to watch, and while I don't know what it's like to deal with PTSD, I at least got the idea of it, and my grandpa has that same type of condition.
The issues that I have with are that I wasn't as emotionally invested in what the characters are dealing with as the movie wants me to be, and the story can be a tad familiar in some aspects. Thank You for Your Service is a great debut for Jason Hall that I'm looking forward to see how his future is going to go.
