Review of Van Diemen's Land (2009) by Catriana M — 23 Jul 2009
Really disappointing. Perhaps the theme has been overworked in the past. But it would've been good to have had a bit more history wound into the overall theme of Alexander Pope escaping the this convict colony in the early1800's before he devoured most of his fellow escapees. No graphic violence (which was a plus). But the characters are barely developed so it's a bit difficult to work out _(let alone empathise)_ with who was chomping on the heart and liver of whom...
Sure the 104 minutes of wide sweeping views of Tasmania were stunning for anyone still unfamiliar with this part of the world. And it was definitely brilliant having the Gaelic and Irish language spoken (with English subtitles) for anyone not familiar with the languages. But otherwise this was just one big & beautiful, long slow lunch.
