Review of Vampire's Kiss (1989) by Haywood J — 21 May 2007
Funny. I'm breaking my no-comedy-over-3-stars rule once more. This movie is one of those early Nick Cage films that takes advantage of his talent and weirdness (in this vein there is also Wild at Heart, Moonstruck, Honeymoon in Vegas, Raising Arizona, not ever seen again until Adaptation).
Hardly anyone I know has seen this film, but those that have admit it is absolutely hilarious, in black ways. Violence and insanity and even vile acts have never played so well. If you like Cage and haven't seen this, just watch it for his editorial accent.
His voice drips with all the sleazy undeserved privilege you could possibly imagine an East Coast tool might have and then some. I made friendships over this movie. As far as Cage's decade of lost street cred in exchange for massive paychecks, I'd give him 10 Con Airs or Face/Offs for another film just as funny as this one.
