Review of The Shrine (2010) by Scott W — 28 Jun 2013
Utterly terrifying, albeit the quality feels low budget or B movieish and the presentation of setting is a bit jumbled. The Shrine is a movie that presents unique situations that cause you to want to scream at the characters while still being more original than a slasher.
The slow series of disturbing events that lead down what seems to be formulaic in the style of movies about cults ends up turning your expectations completely upside down by cleverly toying with the position of the protagonist(s).
The hero antagonist ends up earning the audience's ultimate empathy in an excellent denouement chock-full of pathos.
