Review of The Robe (1953) by Justin O — 29 Dec 2008
:fresh: [b][i]The Robe's story is actually a good story, this is not very evident at the moment it was adapted to the big screen due to a terribly clumsy direction and a screenplay with flaws in some scenes but there are also strong dialogues and scenes where it captures the scent of what the first christians thought and the new opportunity the new religion offered to the ancient world to change their lives.
The performances are cartoonish, Caligula is preposterous and Victor Mature was an awful actor, athletic but untalented. It would be laughable if nowadays a film like this gets an Oscar Best Picture nomination because honestly, this movie is overrated, although I admit the costume design and art direction are impecable.
