Review of The Robe (1953) by Padraig G — 12 Apr 2011
33%, Why so low?
This movie is based on the story of the Roman tribune who was in charge of the execution of Jesus Christ. He feels guilt and is trying to redeem himself.
I don't understand why critics didn't like this. What was wrong? The only reason this movie doesn't get 100% is because of a few historical inaccuracies. They are small though, if you didn't look for them they would just fly over your head.
The score was great. Added for powerful scenes and added suspense and excitement.
The biggest, most amazing thing about this film was the visuals. This was the first movie shot in CinemaScope. It was made in 1953 but when watching it I felt like I was watching a movie made only about 10-20 years ago as opposed to almost 60 years ago. That is how well advanced the camera in this film was.
The acting was pretty good and it had a pretty interesting plot too. It was an edge of your seat type of movie for some but if you know your Bible, no suprises are made.
I thought this definately was an Oscar-worthy film but I've never seen any of the other nominees of that year so I can't really judge.
80% Great movie!
