This Shinkai movie has beautifully painted skies and futuristic scenes, and the geek-military angle is fresh and surprisingly complex for this crowd-pleasing childhood-romance story. It challenges our sincerity in keeping our gigantic promises of youth weighed against the realized cost of possible destruction.
I wish this were a 6-10 episode anime series instead of a mosaic, chronology-hopping tale, but maybe that's coz i'm a simpleton :D.
