Review of The Place Promised in Our Early Days (2004) by Emma M — 19 Dec 2009
OK First of all, I have never seen such beautiful artwork in a film. The use of light and colour is exceptional. Visually stunning and beautifully written, The Place Promised in Our Early Days is a surprisingly powerful film -- just as Makoto Shinkai's earlier creation Voices of a Distant Star.
I had been warned that this film was slow paced -- which it was, however I would argue that it was a necessary component to the film. There were a few unanswered questions in the story, but overall I think this film was well done. I will say that for having dragged out the beginning, the last 5 minutes seemed rushed, as if they wanted to make sure it fit neatly into 90 minutes. However considering how emotionally moving the film is as a whole, I am able to ignore that minor detail.
Highly recommended, though if you are going to watch it make sure you actually WATCH IT. The exposition is a little long, but essential in understanding the plot.
