Review of The Place Promised in Our Early Days (2004) by James M — 07 Jun 2010
Every 10 seconds of this movie unveils another beautiful background, and the soundtrack is subtle without inducing sleep. The story, however, wears its heart on its sleeve, chest, throat, and socks, and the characters are melodramatic adolescents (during either part of the movie's timeline) to the point that I could not bond with any of them.
The sci-fi elements turned me off, hard, mainly for being tools of the characters' love for each other. Makoto Shinkai is excellent at painting a scene, he just can't fill it with substance I like.
