Review of The Name of the Rose (1986) by Rich B — 27 Sep 2007
My favorite Sean Connery movie, based on a great Novel by Umberto Eco. Part Sherlock Holmes, part book of revelations. The obligatory great performances by Ron Perlman, William Hickey as Ubertino, and of course Sean Connery himself together with the deeper themes and questions posed by Eco elevate this movie far beyond a simple murder mystery plot.
Instead it becomes a mythic apocalyptic moment where questions of coincidence versus prophecy and superstition versus logic supersede the simple question of whodunit.
